Counting on Grace
Description
In 1910 Pownal, Vermont, 12-year-old Grace and her best friend Arthur leave school to work as doffers in the mill. Despite being left-handed, Grace struggles to assist her mother, the mill's best worker, on the right-handed job. Every mistake Grace makes impacts her family financially. They find solace in special Sunday lessons from their teacher, who aids them in sending a secret letter to the Child Labor Board about underage labor in Pownal. Their efforts bring Lewis Hine, a famous reformer, to the mill undercover to collect evidence. Hine's interaction and photographs of Grace instill a newfound confidence and hope for a better future for her and her family.
