Doctor Dolittle's Garden

Doctor Dolittle's Garden, by Hugh John Lofting, is a continuation of the adventures of Dr. Dolittle and his assistant, Tommy Stubbins, as first introduced in Doctor Dolittle's Zoo. The story begins with an exploration of Professor Quetch, the curator of the Dog Museum. As the narrative progresses, Dr. Dolittle discovers a way to communicate with insects and becomes captivated by their ancient stories about a colossal insect race. His curiosity piqued, Dr. Dolittle plans an expedition to uncover these giant insects, but to his surprise, he finds one has already made its way to his garden. This book signifies a turning point in Lofting's writing, portraying a transition from whimsical tales to more structured and chronologically ordered storytelling. Lofting was a British author known for creating the beloved character of Doctor Dolittle, a staple in children’s literature. Originally studying at Mount St. Mary's College in Sheffield and later civil engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States, he served in World War I with the Irish Guards. During the war, he chose to send his children letters filled with imaginative stories rather than the harsh realities of war, which eventually led to the creation of the Doctor Dolittle novels.
