Julián Is a Mermaid

In an exuberant picture book, a boy named Julián is inspired by a group of women dressed as mermaids that he sees while riding the subway with his abuela. Enchanted by their colorful costumes and joyful demeanors, Julián daydreams of creating his own mermaid costume using household items. He uses a butter-yellow curtain for his tail and the fronds of a potted fern for his headdress. However, he worries about what his abuela will think of the mess he has made and, more importantly, how she will react to his desire to express himself in this way. The story is a celebration of self-love, individuality, and the joy of embracing one's own unique identity.
