Ko Te Hiakai Tangata: Te Taniwha o Tuarā-rangaia
Description
This is the Maori language edition of Te Hiakai Tangata: The Taniwha of Tuara-Rangaia. The story narrates the tale of a taniwha, Te Hiakai, who menaces travelers and the surrounding iwi from beside a track between villages. When a chief's son is taken by Te Hiakai, the community tries multiple strategies to defeat the taniwha, but fails each time as Te Hiakai outsmarts them. Eventually, Pohutukawa, a chief's daughter, communicates with the taniwha, breaking a spell with her words, which transforms the taniwha into a young warrior named Te Haeata, who was cursed by a tohunga long ago. Pohutukawa and Te Haeata fall in love and share a life together, though Te Haeata remains partially under the spell, turning into an eel in his old age and becoming a guardian in the Rangitaiki river.
