Based on the lives of the author's mother and grandmother, this story follows a widowed Croatian immigrant as she strives to keep her family together in the mining towns of Ontario during the 1920s and 1930s. The protagonist, Frances Chopp, is constantly reminded of her birth, which occurred a week after her father's tragic death. This event brought immense sorrow to her immigrant family. As Frances navigates these challenging circumstances, she must summon the courage, strength, and wisdom to uncover the truth about her family's past and embrace the gifts that will define her future.
