Eleven-year-old Ruby Finley, a Black girl passionate about entomology, discovers an unusual insect in her front yard. Captured for study, the creature reveals itself to be more than just a bug when it burns a hole through Ruby's window and vanishes. As neighborhood items go missing and an old lady disappears, Ruby and her friends embark on an adventure to recover the strange creature before the authorities catch wind.
