The Compton Cowboys: Young Readers' Edition
Description
Inspired by a viral New York Times article, this young readers’ edition shares the uplifting true story of the Compton Cowboys, a group of Black men and women from Compton, California, who found purpose through raising and riding horses. Growing up in a city known for gang violence, they found a safe space in 1988 with the creation of the Compton Junior Posse, a youth program set on a horse ranch. Overcoming harsh realities, the Cowboys became role models in their community, carrying on the tradition of Black cowboys. This edition includes an 8-page insert of color photos by New York Times reporter Walter Thompson-Hernández.
