The Nutcracker and the Mouse King

The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (1816) is a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, a key figure in the German Romantic period, which inspired Tchaikovsky's famous ballet through Dumas' adaptation. The story takes place on Christmas Eve, featuring children Fritz and Marie who are enchanted by a clockwork castle from their godfather Drosselmeyer, and later, a nutcracker. After the nutcracker is broken and fixed, Marie witnesses a battle between the nutcracker-led toys and a mouse army. Despite her efforts to explain, her parents dismiss her story, but Drosselmeyer enriches the tale with legends of the Mouse Queen, adding layers to this narrative of conflict and enchantment.
