Annika's birth is shrouded in mystery. Abandoned as a baby on a church doorstep, she was raised by three eccentric professors in their servant quarters. Annika learned the arts of baking and cleaning from Ellie and Sigrid, the cook and housemaid who found her. Her life takes a dramatic turn when a glamorous woman arrives, claiming to be her mother, and reveals that Annika is an aristocrat whose true home is a castle in Germany. However, life at the ancient castle, Spittal, is not as grand as it seems, and Annika finds solace in her friendship with Zed, a young stable boy who dreams of attending a prestigious riding school in Vienna.
